THE CAN DO COUNTRY
Captain James Cook
Australia may have gotten passed the idea that just because we are a 'lucky country' we can take it easy but somewhere in our national psyche we still harbour the belief that our resources, wealth and lifestyle will last a life time. They won’t. The shine is off our apple and it falls to you and I get it back.
Australia facing a crisis. We share no vision for the country we’re passing to our children. Choose any number of examples,
The first thing I propose is the roll-out of nothing less than a New National Identity. We need to Reinvent ourselves and as n as The Can-Do Country”.
The Can Do Country stands for getting-in and getting the job done, no matter what. It represents the attitude we need to regain our confidence and become one of the top three nations in the world. In what? How about engineering, medicine and curing so-called incurable diseases, social justice, entrepreneurship, swimming (what happened there?), football, statesmanship. In fact, whatever we decide. We need to become the nation known for aspiring to great visions then making them happen. We need a plan for the future, a bold vision which inspires us, and our children, and we need it now.
We need your help to create the greatest-ever Vision for Australia.
Australia facing a crisis. We share no vision for the country we’re passing to our children. Choose any number of examples,
- In what fields are we the undisputed world leaders?
- Why aren't we world leaders in Solar Energy? We're the hottest country on the planet (soon to be a lot hotter!)
- Who is our most senior representative at the UN? (hint… it’s not the Secretary-General!)
- When did we last win a Nobel Peace Prize?
- What is our most inspiring example of world-class infrastructure built since the Sydney Opera House? (finished over 40 years ago)
The first thing I propose is the roll-out of nothing less than a New National Identity. We need to Reinvent ourselves and as n as The Can-Do Country”.

"The Can Do attitude should become as synonymous as mateship to the Australian way of life"
The essence of a Can Do Country is a mindset of getting things done. It requires a belief or sense of certainty that;
If Australia wants to be a nation known for leadership then it needs to embrace a new national identity as the Can Do Country and we as Australians need to start taking greater responsibility ourselves for where this nation is headed.
- We have the courage and ability to tackle difficult challenges,
- That we need to take risks in order to reap rewards,
- That we act with the long term in mind,
- That once we start a job we'll stick to it until it's done.
If Australia wants to be a nation known for leadership then it needs to embrace a new national identity as the Can Do Country and we as Australians need to start taking greater responsibility ourselves for where this nation is headed.
A Can-Do attitude is allergic to mediocrity. It doesn't accept that just because something is, or has always been a certain way that that's a good enough reason to accept it. Furthermore it doesn't accept that if something hasn't been done before then that's a good enough reason not to even try. It's a belief system which grows upwards from the grass roots. If you're part of a Can Do Company, Club, Family or Community-group then you're a key part of the Can Do Country.
